Celebrating classic California and benefiting worthy causes, Wine, Waves & Beyond returns to Pismo Beach and Avila Beach on June 2–4, with a surf invitational, film screening, beach party and grand tasting and silent auction—all just steps from shore.

“This is a super-fun, super-successful event,” says Charles Crellin, vice president of the Central Coast’s Boutique Hotel Group, which launched Wine, Waves & Beyond in 2009 to showcase the area’s unique blend of surf, culinary, and craft beer and wine culture. “We get everyone from bleached-out teenagers to 70-year-old kahunas,” he says, adding that Wine, Waves & Beyond has raised over $180,000 for local charities to date.

For this year’s surftastic lineup, Wine, Waves & Beyond begins on Friday, June 2, with a screening of the surf movie Big Waves on the Big Screen at the historic Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo. At this laidback kick-off, more than 800 moviegoers are expected to descend on Downtown SLO for an epic wave story paired with local wine and beer available for purchase. All proceeds from the screening benefit Still Frothy (, a nonprofit that awards scholarships to young surfers and stokes the next generation’s passion for the sport.

The following day, overlooking the ocean on the lawn at the Cliffs Resort, Rabobank sponsors “Barrel to Barrel” from 2 to 5pm, a grand tasting of the Central Coast’s finest flavors from 40 wineries, eight breweries and 12 restaurants, plus a silent auction. Crellin says that the food, in particular, will shine at this event.

“The big hits last year were exotic soups, good sandwiches and Mexican food—always a favorite. Plus we have a salsa contest among the chefs that guests can try. There’s more food than anyone could possibly want; our bites are heartier than most grand tastings’.”

Perhaps this explains why Barrel to Barrel regularly sells out—a wonderful fact considering that, for the second year, all proceeds from the event will go to GleanSLO (, the organization that harvests leftover fruits and vegetables from local gardens, backyards and farms to feed those who need it most. Since its inception in 2010, GleanSLO has rescued over one million pounds of produce for the hungry.

“Partnering with GleanSLO makes a lot of sense, given our mission and where we live,” says Crellin. “We have so much here in terms of produce, so much that’s left behind that could help.” Crellin adds that the Wine, Waves & Beyond board of directors feels good about presenting a check to GleanSLO. “Last year, we were able to give them $2,300. That was enough to finance another position or purchase special equipment.”

Wine, Waves & Beyond culminates on Sunday, June 4, with the 805 Surf Classic, presented by Still Frothy at the Pismo Beach Pier. This free, beachside event includes an invitational for men’s shortboard and longboard, as well as open heats for women’s shortboard and longboard, adaptive athletes and local winemakers and brewmasters. Following the competition, the 805 Classic Beach Party takes over pierside Pismo Beach with a free concert on the beach, a beer garden at the Seaventure Resort featuring Firestone Walker brews, and food trucks. A VW show of Bugs, buses and more caps the weekend off right, including a VW cruise and voting.
